How Aligner Integration works
Practices rarely struggle with aligner care because of one missing tool. They struggle because purpose, roles, records, and conversations are not connected. The methodology works on all four together.
A Malocclusion Mindset
Sheldon's teaching starts from a simple position: malocclusion is a clinical finding worth identifying and explaining, not only a cosmetic preference to wait for the patient to raise. In his view, patients deserve to know what was found and what it may mean for them.
What happens next is always the patient's decision, made with their treating clinician. The methodology is about making sure that conversation happens consistently and well.
Practice fundamentals
Agree on why, then agree on how.
Before any workflow changes, the team needs a shared purpose: why the practice identifies and explains orthodontic findings, and what it believes patients deserve to know.
- A practice purpose or belief statement the whole team can say in their own words
- A common vocabulary, so every team member describes findings the same way
- An agreed standard for diagnostic records and new patient intake
- A realistic implementation plan built from small, visible wins
Team dynamics and the patient experience
It takes a team to help a patient decide.
Every role has a defined part in the patient journey, from the first phone call to the treatment coordinator.
- Front desk: warm, prompt answers to new patient calls, with the goal of a scheduled visit
- Assistants and hygienists: educate and build trust; they do not decide candidacy
- Doctor: confirms the findings and makes the clinical recommendation
- Treatment coordinator: walks the patient through details, options, and next steps
The new patient experience matters too: a welcome before the first visit, no long wait on arrival, and a practice tour that shows the care and technology already in place.
Patient centricity
Patients need to understand before they can value.
Patients understand what they can see. The methodology puts the patient's own scans and photos at the center of the conversation, so findings are visual rather than abstract.
- Consistent records on new patients, shown to the patient, not only filed
- A simple structure for explaining findings: the problem, the likely consequence of waiting, then the options
- Findings discussed in front of the patient as the hygienist, doctor, and coordinator hand off to each other
The consultation conversation
Clear, respectful, and followed through.
The final conversation is where many interested patients are lost. The methodology helps treatment coordinators run it calmly and transparently.
- A private, unhurried setting for the conversation
- Total investment and payment options explained clearly and honestly
- Questions and hesitations treated as part of a normal decision, not as obstacles
- A consistent follow up rhythm, because "not now" does not mean never
- Simple tracking at each stage of the journey, so the practice can see where patients stall
What Aligner Integration is, and is not
Aligner Integration is practice consulting and team training. It does not diagnose, prescribe, or provide clinical advice, and it is not tied to any aligner brand. Every treatment decision stays with the patient and their treating clinician.
